Jeannine’s Final Farewell
When I accepted the role of Executive Director 18 years ago, I never imagined how profoundly it would shape my life. I wasn’t sure I’d survive the first year and those who were around back then, if they’re honest, would probably agree!
I remember how excited I was when I got the job. I was finally an Executive Director; something I had always wanted. I was only days into the job when I realized that having the title and being a leader were two very different things. I was in over my head, afraid of making the wrong decision, disappointing people, and failing.
Fortunately, I didn’t know what I didn’t know until I was already in the thick of it… and sinking!
Then, days turned into weeks, weeks into months, and months into years. Through guidance, patience, and grace, I fully credit you for shaping me into something resembling a leader. I learned, mostly the hard way, that you can’t be an effective leader while trying to make everyone happy or avoiding failure. Leadership is about making the decision you believe is right, accepting that you won’t always get it right, and having the courage to own the outcome.
Somewhere along the way, I began prioritizing trust over being liked. If there is one thing I hope I’ve earned over the past 18 years, it’s that trust. That is the heart of this letter. Whether we agreed on every decision or not, I hope you always knew that I cared deeply about this Chamber, its members, and the community that I (we) love so much.
As I wrap up these final days, I acknowledge that I was far from perfect. If there was ever a time where I was short on a phone call, rushed/overwhelmed at an event, or forgot to acknowledge an important milestone, I sincerely apologize. Please know that it was never intentional or personal.
While I know I risk leaving someone out, I can’t leave without thanking those who’ve gone above and beyond for me: those who rooted for me (Tish, Deni, and Theresa); who pushed me (Marty and Jean); who helped me (Roseanne, Craig, Christina,Tamekia (especially as of late-thank you!) and the Maplewood Public Works crew); who supported me (Aisha, Kim, Anna, Nick, and the late, great Sharon Sneed); who inspired me (Halley, Mary, Rob, “Just Jim,” and the late Bob Harsh); and those who’ve had my six every step of the way-I will FOREVER be grateful (the Rayburns, Barry, Paul, Laura, Kristy, Patrick, Jerry, Eliza, Christy, and Dana).
Finally, and most importantly I give thanks and all of the glory to God for any success and for bringing me to this wonderful community and blessing me with this AMAZING job and for the lifelong friendships that have brought me so much happiness.
To everyone reading this-thank you for making the last 18 years the very best of my life. Everyone should be so lucky to have a job that’s this difficult to leave.
